Language Training

training programs that will help newcomers, provincial minister of immigration Dr. Eric Hoskins said on March 18 at a media reception, where he met several ethnic media representatives for the first time.

"Good language skills are the foundation for success for newcomers," the minister noted. "This investment helps newcomers improve language skills, contribute to the workforce, and help build a stronger Ontario."

The funding will support 31 language training programs that expect to help newcomers land jobs and be more successful in their current jobs. Accounting, business and finance, information technology, engineering and manufacture, health care and pharmaceutical, hospitality and tourism are some of the sectors these new programs will focus on.

The new programs will strengthen language skills, with a specific focus on the language use in the work place, according to a ministry press release. Some of these programs will be taught in the workplace itself.

The additional funding will be invested over three years.

Health and Safety Training


Ergonomics refers to your body's capacity to perform a task at hand in the safest and most efficient way possible. The key to ergonomics is to be efficient and productive in your work without harming your body in the process. If you harm your body in order to complete specific tasks in the workplace I doubt you will be able to carry on completing your tasks in an efficient or productive manner. Ergonomics will allow workers to continue their tasks without putting risk to their body's well being. Health and safety training teaches workers the science of ergonomics so they can complete tasks such as lifting and lowering without injuring themselves. Manual handling training is a part of the health and safety training curriculum which shares ergonomic practices with workers.

Manual handling training encourages workers to ask for assistance if they are having trouble carrying a heavy item. If a machine can be used to support the heavy load, opt for that instead. It also recommends that they clear the way before picking up a particular item so they don't injure themselves by tripping or falling. Tripping and falling can lead to permanent and serious injuries in the workplace. Manual handling DVDs teach workers how to lift and lower heavy objects. For example, when you are picking up a heavy box you should make sure to spread your legs to shoulder width apart so that you can support a heavy load. Never bend your body while picking up a box. You should always kneel down so that your back is perpendicular to the ground while picking up a heavy box. By providing health and safety training sessions on a regular basis for your workers you will notice the number of sick leaves taken to have considerably reduced.

Manual handling teaches workers to use the strength from their legs instead of their back. This substantially reduces the risk of injury. The skills taught during manual handling training can be used in the workplace and everywhere else. Manual handling is a matter of safety and the well being of your workers. You strain your body a lot less if you can push a load rather than pulling it. Pushing a load gives you more control while moving a particular object. When workers learn during manual handling training how common injuries occur they will do their best to avoid those situations.

Driver Training


It’s been quite a while since I posted anything about “Hyper-milers”. After putting $54 in my gas tank yesterday I feel it may be time again.
Each year there is a “race” to determine who is the nations most fuel efficient driver. Last year it was held in Madison, Wisconsin. Wayne Gerdes is considered the greatest driver in the hyper-miler world. He goes to extremes to reach 150 mpg in a Honda Civic Hybrid.

Like Nascar racing many of the techniques he uses in this “race” wouldn’t be appropriate for you and me. However, many of the things he does to save gas are, in fact, applicable.

The heavy footed way most of us drive is neither efficient, nor safe - nor does it save much time. One study found that fast starts and hard stops cut travel time by just 4 percent–75 seconds on a half-hour trip.

It’s great that people are starting to buy cars that get better gas mileage; however, if you’re driving inefficiently you could improve your mileage that much more.

Below are some tips on improving your gas mileage, not matter what kind of car you drive.

1. Drive the speed limit – You’re really not going to get there much faster by speeding. Really.
2. Stop using the brake – Look further up the road and anticipate stops ahead, whether due to traffic, stop signs or signals. Lay off the gas as ease to the stop or slowdown, what’s the hurry, you’re going to stop anyway.
3. Coast – If you think about it, there are a lot of places that you can take your foot off the gas and let gravity take over.
4. Clean your car – Every extra pound wastes gas. Clear your trunk of all that useless stuff.
5. Change your oil often – Engine friction wastes gas.
6. Check your tire pressure – It’s simply more efficient.
